Lately I've been playing with lufs (Linux Userland FileSystem), it has a
variety of transports, including ssh and ftp. It also integrates nicely
with autofs, so:

ls /mnt/net/ftp/irulan/pub

or even

ls /mnt/net/ftp/ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/

Works quite transparently.
