Maxtors have never given me any problems.  I've had 4 over the last few
years, a 800MB, a 4.3GB and two 40GB IDE drives.

Yes, I have here, a 60GB Seagate paperweight that died suddenly on the
owner.  Guess who has the job of recovering the data -- Yours truly...

I've somehow got to find some way of storing 60GB of data -- on a
machine where I've got at most, about 40~50GB of contiguous space.

I don't mind IBM drives -- although I'm edgy about them after my 40GB
Deskstar drive died 24 hours before a LAN.
