These packages are the same (see below).  Debian has named the
package "pppoe" rather than "rp-pppoe" to avoid the need for a
future name change.

    $ cat /usr/share/doc/pppoe/copyright 
    This package was Debianized on the 30th of December 1999 by Christian Hudon
    <chrish at debian.org> using source obtained from
    http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe.html

    rp-pppoe is copyright # 1999-2000 Roaring Penguin Software Inc.

    rp-pppoe is licenced under the GNU General Public License. On Debian
    GNU/Linux systems, the full text of the GPL is available under
    /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL.

Under Debian GNU/Linux. I've normally just run pppoeconf(8) and
followed the prompts.  Remember, there are many things that can
go wrong - the problem could easily be elsewhere.

I like to run the following command to ensure the local cabling
is working (obviously, change the ethernet device).  If you
get a response like this, then the problem is normally your
username/password or something at your ISP.

    # pppoe -A -I eth2
    Access-Concentrator: qct1-charlotte
    AC-Ethernet-Address: 00:03:4b:ac:90:02
