That is mostly correct (as the owner of a set of these). The discs 1 and 2
are the normal install and disc 3 has some extra goodies like precompiled
winmodem drivers, NVidia drivers and kernels and the source code for all of
the offered kernel varieties (SMP, Secure, Marcelo - whatever that is). The
higher number CD's are as you say, full of source code and some commercial
offerings. Club members got to download the 3 cd pre-release Download
Version or the first 3 CD's of the pre-release PowerPack. I have both sets.

There have been quite a few problems pre-release and already there are some
250Mb of patches and bug fixes posted (along with the various kernels'
source codes). The kernel has been updated twice in the last week including
a patch to stop the kernel literally destroying LG based CDR's. That kernel
was released yesterday.

I can therefore understand (and appreciate) why the kernel source was not
placed on the pre-release (download version) CD set. In fact, after the
official release, I will be binning my downloaded copies because any
resultant install would be flawed.

There has been a "slip" in the shipping date of Mandrake 9.2 - it was
supposed to be last week and then this week, but I suspect it might be up to
another two weeks before shipping commences. There are probably a lot of
big silver coffee coasters/frisbees sitting somewhere in France right now
(my opinion only).

Mandrake by and large do it well and are still keen to do the right thing by
the community but like all things pre-release, the rules might not
necessarily apply because only a small part of the community get to see the
product.

Regards,

Rick Phillips
