[The exec has proposed that the SIG HUMBUG mailing lists be folded into
general with a marker in the subject line. This message is jumping the gun
a bit]

There are two new projects on the drawing board for the HUMBUG cluster, and
both could be useful, instead of just producing pretty pictures like the
weather simulator.

First is a video and animation render farm. I am currently involved in
editing and producing effects for a documentary film, and I already have a
video editor with render farming built in. The project will involve
getting render farming working for as much open source video / animation /
3D software as possible.

Second is a compile cluster. The GNU compilers are capable of speeding up
the compile process by spreading the work load around a cluster. Other
compilers may have similar features. The tricky bit here is that we will
need a way of dealing with multiple OS's with multiple distros. We also
have the problem of dealing with customized systems. For instance, compile
package A for distro B of OS C, but it will only run on box X which has
version Y of library Z, which is different from a standard install and is
used by package A. Baby steps people, baby steps B-).

Both projects will produce systems that will be useful to HUMBUG members,
even if they are not interested in clustering. Basically, if you need a
render farm or a compile cluster, you will be well aware that you need one,
and will probably bug us to get it finished.
