Indeed it has, everything and more besides - google.com/linux
quickly got me there very quickly.
However his site hasn't helped (so far), I suspect that unless I
am prepared to download and compile the latest beta for his sis
driver (he's the sis developer for XFree), then it won't. I
suspect that going to all that trouble (with an unknown outcome)
just isn't worth the hassle unless I really, really wanted to get
3d etc working.

Bingo! Thanks, it did help... can now get X nice and clear at
640x480 through to 1024x768 at up to 32bit without any problems when
going back to a text console. Nice.
(Is it ever possible to get more than 1024x786 out of a 15" laptop
LCD?)
That's all I needed to do, but I assume that by using the vesa
driver then X is unable to do many of the things that the card is
otherwise capable of doing (eg, hardware acceleration and 3D, and
the more advanced X extensions). Oh well, not to worry - at least
it works.

Yeah? I put SuSE on this particular box, and I happen to have
mandrake9.2 on a dvd (Linux Format, Dec03 issue)... I guess on this
occasion I just chose the wrong one to install:)
Anyway, X is now working for what it needs to do, thanks heaps.
(For more advanced multimedia stuff, then it can always dual-boot
for that:)
