I find it's the sending in Word format that really gets me (as in:
"please submit your resume in Word format").
Most of the time people will readily believe you if you say you
couldn't open the attachment (the "open" phrasing makes it all a bit
more familiar). I haven't yet had to escalate to "your document had a
macro virus in it, could you resend it as text?"
