I can see your point, but everyone's usage is different.
I was already being sent .doc and .xls files all the time. StarOffice
meant that I could (usually) read them fine in Linux, so it really saved
me there. I also found it easy to use, and nice with it's typesetting
(no where near as good as LaTeX, but easier).
Until StarOffice, the .xls and .doc files I received meant that I'd
normally need MSOffice. It used to drive me crazy how many people would
assume this. Lots of people required documents in Word format as well
(recruiters and resumes come to mind here). MSOffice normally uses a
similar amount of RAM to what you mention above, so I'm certainly not
losing there. More importantly, a legitimate copy of MSOffice is more
than enough to pay for a GB of RAM, with quite a bit of change left over!
