No, tape drive hardware compression is completely seperate to the
compression that dump offers.

Even though I don't trust compressed backups on tape I have no concerns
about using compression with other media.  I backup my personal systems to
an external firewire drive (actually an IDE drive connected to a
firewire-IDE bridge) [1].

When backing up ext2/3 filesystems to my firewire harddrive I routinely
use bzip2 -9 compression (dump -j9)
