Thanks for your advice & input.
Using your advice, I investigated the boot config & found that it pointed to
some odd things.
I've worked out that having 2 hard disks seems to confuse Grub!
(Seems to be no problem to Lilo though)

Short term I've disabled my 2nd disk!

I've abandoned the beta of Lycros that I was trying, because after I
selected a graphics card the keyboard stopped working.
The keyboard worked whilst it was booting up, but would cease totally once
it came time to log in.
Have re-installed Mandrake (Dolphin) - so far, so good.
