Hi Michael. I got a good counter-argument here.

I always put /home on a separate partition, regardless of what else I do
to set up a system. This has been handy on more than one occasion.

If a corruption, hard- or soft ware, hits you, it does less damage as
each partition is somewhat quarantined. If a reinstall is needed due to
a completely fouled filesystem, all of your home settings are safe.

This worked especially well when I moved from Mandrake to Debian. I took
note of which programs I used, made sure I put them in the new install,
and just had a quick chown to do as the two distros will start out on
different uid's. Mandrake starts at 1000, while Debian gives the first
user 500. Despite this one and only issue, all of my personal settings
were safe and complete, saving me hours of running each program and
trying to remember how I best liked everything.

Other than this, I tend to only have /, /home, /opt, and a swap as
separate partitions. All other options, for me, have been too
superfluous.
