I'm in the process of slowly upgrading my personal workstation, and
the other day I picked up a new m'board (with a new processor/ddr
ram etc).
The idea was that I simply replace my current m'board with this new
one and keep the current components, and it'll be a very nice
upgrade when it finally happens.
But oops, getting the latest'n'greatest sometimes isn't such a good
idea :-)
This m'board has one of these new agp 8x "pro" slots on it, which
are totally incompatable with the current generation 2x and 4x agp
slots. So unfortunately, now I need to upgrade my video card (a
relatively new geforce4).
As it turns out, I can get a "basic" 64mb/4x/tvout geforce4 mx440
for it for $100, which is certainly very good value.
However, since this will be a one-off that I want to keep for at
least a few years, I thought I'd look around for a compatable 128mb
card that could do true 8x, tvout, true multihead, and had a TV and
radio tuner on it that would work with linux.
(Ok, I can live without the tv/radio tuner on it, these can be got
for ~$100 as a separate item in a pci slot).
I've done some google searches, but it is all quite confusing to
sort out what is what.
So I'm wondering if anyone here has some knowledge of, or
recommendations for, a good high-end video card that I can use with
this m'board.
I know that the latest ATI cards are really good, but going from
what I've heard in other places, they are not so well supported
for linux (totally unsupported by ATI, and despite what's
available at http://gatos.sourceforge.net). At least nvidia is
releasing linux drivers for their cards (that work well), even if
it is in the form of closed-source binaries.
Many thanks for any pointers.
Cheers
Tony
