This generally indicates that your kernel has no support for the device.
What can you tell us about your kernel? What can you tell us about the
chipset for the lan card?
Once you have found the chipset you should be able to determine what
supoprt there is. Most distributions these days have support for just
about everything (as modules) in their default kernel, you should be
able to load the appropriate module with insmod.
If you are unsure about the chipset for the lan card you could look at
the output of lspci or cat /proc/pci.
