Tried nasd?  I had a play with this when I was fiddling with XFree under
cygwin.  Can't remeber exactly how I had it configured but if nasd was
running on the widows machine (started as part of xinit or whatever)
then you could play sounds.  Worked fine for cheesy stuff like the
window manager sound effects and I was ven able to play MP3s with XMMS.
Admittedly the bandwith usage was a bit high for my 10M network 8^)
