I have been investigating performance tuning on Solaris (on a Sun E250)
and came across something in the iostat output that I can't find an
explanation for anywhere.

It relates to errors reported for the disks. For example...

sd0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 134 Transport Errors: 1388
Vendor: IBM Product: DNES30917SUN9.0G Revision: SAD0 Serial No:
99401MF747
Size: 9.06GB <9055065600 bytes>
Media Error: 0 Device Not Ready: 0 No Device: 129 Recoverable: 0
Illegal Request: 0 Predictive Failure Analysis: 0

(greping for the error line for all devices...
sd0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 134 Transport Errors: 1388
sd6 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 4
sd7 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 1 Transport Errors: 0
sd8 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 4 Transport Errors: 18
sd9 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 3 Transport Errors: 0
sd10 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 129 Transport Errors: 117
sd11 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 125 Transport Errors: 117
st5 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 0 Transport Errors: 0
st8 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 2 Transport Errors: 0

I can't seem to find anything that gives an explanation of what the
error types mean. Anyone happen to know what these are and should I be
panicing and running around looking for replacements?

Oh, this machine is *heavily* loaded a lot of the time with a large
amount of disk activity (it's a database server). Hopefully it will be
replaced within a couple of months all going to plan.

Thanks
Michael
