Try using other programs.  I use Ogle, MPlayer, and Xine, depending on what
I want to do.  Ogle is good for DVD menus, MPlayer has support for just
about everything else, and Xine I try if the other two are not good enough.

The way you get the picture to the video card has a big impact on
performance.  I find that choosing the correct method from MPlayers
collection will often solve most performance issues.
