XFree86 can switch resolutions on the fly using Ctl-Alt-number pad plus or
minus. The plus key increases resolution, the minus key decreases
resolution. When you do that, the monitor has to resync, it will go black
for X seconds, and finally come back with your new resolution. To test
resync speed, change resolution, and count how long it takes for you to see
a picture again. Since modern monitors take a long time, no fancy timing
equipment is needed.

The monitor I am typing this on can switch between 7 resolutions, at 3
seconds between resyncs, thats 21 seconds to cycle through them all, longer
if you actually take the time to look at the screen between switches B-).

You could also switch between X and any of the text VT's with
Ctl-Alt-Function key. This will also cause a resync. Finally, rebooting
and reseting X cause a video card reset, and thus a resync.
