Lucent Chipset based PCI Software modems have had excellent support in
linux for some time now. Support is good enough to use them reliably in
hylafax machines and routers. These days they realy do have some
advantages over external ones, being cheaper, dont use a serial port
(1), don't take up space, a power point or create cable tangle.

Mind you its taken a while for the quality of the product to become
acceptable.

(1) So many machines now only come with one serial port.
