Whilst the better quality KVM switches will fake a mouse, keyboard and
monitor to each computer connected to it (when that computer is not the
one selected), a lot of KVM switches will not do this little trick (it
also requires the KVM switch recognising what sort of keyboard, mouse and
monitor you have connected to it).

Hence, when each computer wants to recognise the keyboard, mouse and
monitor, you do need to have that computer be the 'selected' one.
Otherwise, you will run into odd problems of the keyboard and mouse not
working when you wish to use the computers via the KVM switch.

( Eg, trying having the KVM switch on the Linux computer, and booting up
your windows computer. Chances are that it will not properly recognise
  the keyboard or mouse )
