I have recently began learning MySQL + PHP.
To do it I purchased the 'Learn MySQL in 24 hours' book from SAM
Publishing. It has some PHP examples in it for the rest of the stuff I
found PHP tutorial sites on the web.
I also downloaded and examined the PHP code of others that did a similar
function to what I wanted. I did alot of copy, pasting and experimenting
from there.
I looked at the code of my first PHP page the other day. It took me a
week to write the original page and just over an hour to make it about
50 times better.
