Without these error messages, there isn't much that we can do to help you.
If you can tell us what the error messages are, there might be a chance we
can help fix the problem. Otherwise, your best bet would be try to remove
the failed libraries and go back to an old working configuration.

Not sure how to remove the failed libraries. I'm tentative with a gui
(Windows convert) and really sketchy on the command line with this type of
stuff.
For errors, etc., after boot up and login as normal user
[david@ david]$startx
hostname: No address associated with name (probably due to some other issue)
execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 8)
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

X configration is highly dependant on the graphics card and
monitor, so unlikely to get it running at any reasonable
resolution with a default config.
You might also want to take the time to read
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html and
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html.
These will help you to ask questions in such a way that we
can help you quicker.

thanks for the addresses. I hope this info helps. I had a bit of a squizz at
my config file but I need to spend more time fiddling and reading the man
pages before I start messing with it. Would posting the monitor section
help?
thanks for the weekend time,
David
