I don't think it's just luck. I use the full set of KDE 3.1.2 compiled from 
cvs with gcc 3.2 on my little notebook. I have not had anything bad happening 
to me like one can reliably expect from a certain crap-ware from the 
north-east of the us.

Right now I deploy many Linux only workstations for a client using kde, 
startoffice and acroread.

For convenience I use COL 3.1.1 as a basic frame work and upgrade kernel, x, 
qt, kde and any libraries needed and as recommended by the kde team. This 
procedure works just fine, and the users are very happy with what they get.
