Folks,

This is my third attempt at writing this email, if I miss a little bit
in my explanation, it's because I've buggered up again....
But all the practice should make it much quicker to type than the last
time (without all the fluff)

The problem:
File opens/file saves/directory listings on shares from our samba
server occasionally pause for a short time ranging from a couple of
seconds up to 30 or more.  This is often enough to make the windows
machines crash.

Other network services to the server do not pause, and all client
machines do not pause at once.  The pauses seem unrelated and
totally random.  

The details:

Samba server Version 2.2.3a-12 for Debian (Woody)
Filesystem /dev/md2 on /home type ext3 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro)
 - software raid 1, ext3, mounted with noatime flag
Kernel 2.4.19 compiled by me, no extra patches
Forward & reverse dns entries for hosts connecting
samba config file: http://mutton.humbug.org.au/samba/smb.conf
log file for client: http://mutton.humbug.org.au/samba/log.patrick

Client machines:

Windows XP Home or Win98SE all with latest vendor patches applied.

Solutions or where to head:

I've got no idea, can someone point me in the right direction?
