Hi,
Here's a novel concept - you could buy Adobe Acrobat for Linux (No I
don't work for Adobe). It will do exactly what you want. It would support a
company that has tried to do the right thing and produce commercial software
for the Linux Community (O.K. I did say they "tried"). It might encourage
Adobe to make more of their software available on Linux (is there a good DTP
tool out there like PageMaker?).
O.K. some may say "but it is closed source", but Open Source isn't the
only software model out there and companies will have to make money somehow.
I might also point out that Adobe were giving away Acrobat Reader for free a
very long time before it became popular for the masses on the Net to do so.
I personally am still prepared to pay for and support software that does the
job for me whatever the distribution model (Acrobat full version doesn't
cost THAT MUCH). Anyhow it would solve your problem.
I find that many filters and converters are rarely 100% accurate in
translation and can lead to problems to read the files by others (eg I find
that some Postscript files will render fine under ghostview, but not other
viewing software like Acrobat). The only other point I would make is that if
you want to use the software for invoicing, would you want to risk any
incompatibilities? I am sure that you wouldn't be too thrilled if a client
refused to pay you because they couldn't open the PDF invoice. Anyhow it is
something to think about as an option.
Cheers!
Andrew.
