I'd suggest using two different media, too; earlier in my career I was
less than careful when backing for a reinstall and found myself
without my data---this is why my email archives go back only to 1999
and not 1997.

What worked very well for me when I moved to the US was to condense
the filesystem into a file (with dump, cpio, tar, what-have-you),
encrypt it with gpg and then stash it on a conveniently located
network-attached filesystem.

When I have money again I intend to install RAID support from the
beginning so I can simply add drives and expand filesystems as
necessary.
