I've toyed with running a few programs in wine via xdmcp and never had
much of that problem. What program you running?

Serving lots of fonts over a 10Mb link seems to always result in lag,
just try running Openoffice and hit the font selector menu. ouch.

Out of interest, does the lag still occur the second time you run the
program?

Probably not possible with your xterm, however you can serve fonts out
around twice as fast via an nfs mount rathen than via the font server.
