Well quite frankly all of the methods suggested in section 6 basically
suck.  They'll probably work fine for you, but I'm about to write the
author.

I am however pleased to see they suggest shutting down the machine to
single user mode first, although *I* would also mount the parititions
read-only just in case---network connection or no, there's no other
way to guarantee nothing will write to the disk while you're working.

(I don't mean to give you personally a hard time, and I wish you the
best of luck, I just think the advice could be better.)
