Don't worry Greg. I use dump to do backups under Linux and have for some
time. I've also never seen a problem with restores (and I do check my
dumps periodically). I will be investigating these claims of "stale data"
more closely. If all else fails I may bring forward my intended jump to
xfs which most definately considers xfsdump/xfsrestore the correct and
recommended way to backup (according to SGI supplied documentation).
For a while, I've been proposing that ext2/3 will start to fail off in
performance relatively to xfs/reiserfs/jfs as time goes on. I read today,
while looking into this matter, that ext2/3 apparently starts to suffer a
storage efficiency problem once filesystems go into the TB (terrabyte)
range (didn't record a reference sorry).
At this point I think ext2/3 will be sidelined and eventually (some years
down the track) deprecated just as the ext filesystem was before it. I
think both xfs & reiser4 will go on to be the "standard" Linux
filesystems, with xfs having the edge initially as it is far more mature
(reiser4 is only beta after all :). Jfs may yet come into its own but it
doesn't seem to be being pushed as much.
Cheers,
-Rob
