This is not unique to GNU tar -- it's common practice and is
seen in programs like restore as well.

| This is a major deficiency, and yet another reason I will not use
| reiserfs.

The general anti-dump stance of Linus and the frequent stories
about flaky behaviour under Linux is the main serious reason why
I still don't actually use Linux. The truth is that dump is the
perfect tool for backups and I just won't use any system that
does not provide a proper working dump/restore.
