Well, there is the problem. It's quirky[1]. When I've been busy trying to
use it, it's failed on occasion, and when I finally do remember to go
check out what I did wrong, I can't spot what I did wrong (even when
looking through the shell history). 

So while the function may actually work 100% correctly and the error
being operator induced, when I was using it didn't behave as I expect,
and it was more critical to get things working, rather than being
elegant in my immediate solution.

I haven't actually bothered with the don't cross FS option for quite
some time because of this possible incompatability between brain and
OS, so I'll have to give it a good play sometime soon to see if I can
replicate the problems.

[1] Quirky doesn't mean it doesn't work. It means the brain hasn't
spent enough time wrapping itself around it.
