My roomate has a Canon CanoScan N676U that he got a few weeks back, it's
small, bus powerd, very good overall(I don't use scanners much so I'm
prolly not a good judge). So I flinched it from his room to play with it ..
And it's surported under Linux!

Seems Canon uses a allready known and surported set of chips from a Linux
friendly/(Not unfriendly) bunch for atleast /some/ of there scanners..

Gives you a good idea whats working and whats not.
I'm still poking around and trying to work out how to make the 'very
bleading edge' tarballs to compile and work, but this family of scanners
seem to be under quite active development:
- 24.11.2002 Testversion 0.45-TEST3 is out. It makes the coarse
calibration of the CanonScan models work.
- 16.12.2002 Testversion 0.45-TEST4 is out. Added CanoScan N1240U support
and fixed (hopefully) the EPSON 1260 motor problem. Added Epson TPA
autodetection, at least for the 1260.
- 20.12.2002 Testversion 0.45-TEST5 is out. Added CanoScan N1220U support
which is not tested so far.
AFAIK, Canon is a very good/reliable/etc brand for this sort of equipment,
if it wasn't for the lack of Linux(And even propper MacOSX! Well, sorta,
it's a PhotoShop plugin that does a fine job if you plug it into
Graphics Converter instead of having to shell out or PS) surport..
Apart from crummy software surport, has anyone got any comments about the
relyabilty of the hardware it'sself? And comparasions with other brands?
