That does seem odd. Are you sure there were no errors or warnings when you
compiled it?

If you have public-key authentication enabled then what you seek is
either an ssh-agent (which will require you to supply a passphrase)
or a passphraseless key. The latter approach should only be used
with restrictions on what commands are executed.

A book I found helpful was SSH, The Secure Shell by Barret & Silverman
published by O'Reilly and Associates.
