[H-GEN] Problems with ppp connecting to UQ modembank with RH7.2

I have successfully been using the default script for over 3 years, running 
into ihug. but at one stage I had terrible problems and switched to using 
ifup ppp0 (configuring thru linuxconf -> network -> ppp accounts)
