The CD's were from APC magazine a month or two ago. (3.0r1)
I commented out the lines that referred to the CD's and added one:
"deb http://security.debian.org stable/updates main contrib non-free"
I also did the apt-get update a couple of times after that.
"apt-cache search perl5" shows:

RedHat 9 (or whatever the latest is), here I come!
Still confused...
