After some poking around, I didn't realise there was a mailing list
dedicated to linux-ppp, it seems as though some of the code is broken. I
could dig further and produce a bug report if I had the time and if I
didn't need to have this ppp link operational and if I hadn't seen
someone else report the same problem (well I think it was the same).

It has seem alright for the short periods I have been prodding, but
needing this link up has limited my play time :)
