having had a run in with file deletion (who puts config files in a
/var/log subdir) I happen to know a fair bit about file reovery on ext2,
more than anyone should ever know IMHO. :)
First let me say that the damage done is only as bad as you have
permission to cause, so all those naughty people out there that do
everything as root are asking for trouble.
Secondly let me say that unless you un-mounted the partition with in
seconds of the r incident the chances of finding complete files is slim,
believe me I spent 36 straight hours looking for 4 files on a 4GB drive.
There are several products out there the best one I found was one that
let you inspect the drive on block at a time, painful I know bit it was
the best i could do - I think it was lde (the linux disk editor) but I
used about 7 or 8 different methods in that time so I moight be wrong, I
did use lde and it is worth a shot. I would't hold out any hopes of
reovering your entire petition though.
Lastly let me say if rm -f caused your problem it was becaus you passed
it a bad argument or no argument at all, I would recomend you read very
very carfully before pressing enter on an rm line and/or use the -i
option.
