I'm tempted to suggest you were showing disrespect to the speaker by
not showing up early, but that would be teasing, and I don't do that
;)

The talk could not have started all that early, as Raymond and I were
getting the seats ready at only a few minutes to six, so we're
quibbling about only a few minutes.

For reasons beyond our control, we can't have talks in a separate room
at this time. The compromise we made of reserving the front of the
room for listeners did seem to work very well, if I may say so. I must
admit, I'm still tempted to turn the network off during talks; but we
certainly don't want to force members to attend talks.

As for Humbug members showing respect to speakers, I completely
agree. As an executive member it is personally embarrassing when a
member is disrespectful in any way to a speaker/presenter. I'd like to
think that everyone would expend the tiny amount of effort to leave
the room if they wish to talk, and happily, most do.

Maybe it's just normal for a small number of people to fail to realise
that the Humbug organisers (and I'm meaning executive plus helpers
here) actually go out of their way to organise talks, and aren't doing
it for their own health. Just to repeat: we organise these talks for
your benefit, to learn new things, to entertain, to keep Humbug `in
the loop', if you don't want to be a part of that, just leave the room
(or better yet, the club).

That the talk was announced on such short notice is very unusual,
normally there's at least a week of notice. However, if another talk
presents itself at such late notice, we'll still take advantage of it.

(As it happens, Tobi seems quite happy and enthusiastic with how the
talk went).

I'm sorry if the events of Saturday didn't turn out for you Trent (and
partner) and we'll make sure talks start on the dot in future. We'll
continue to do our best to arrange the best setup for
presentations. As for members being respectful, well, that's up to
them.

cheers,
