Thanks again for all your support. I'm gradually learning.
The public share is working as
> [public]
> comment = Public Stuff
> path = /home/local/samba-public
> public = yes
> writable = yes
> write list = @users
However I think the majority of my problems were permission specific
problems I now have the public directory set to 'drwxrwxrwx root root'
Nothing else seems to work
