I think what's happening here is that mozilla's auto-complete facility
is popping up a transient window with some autocompletion hints.
This is the eqivalent of what MS-ers would know as "ToolTips".
Simple apps like "xterm" et al work because they stick to a single
window. (Try turning off autocompletion in mozilla and see if that helps).
Remember, in X, "window" includes things like popups, icons and other
arcana.

Not really ridiculous when you look at the underlying definition of "window".
I would suggest 9wm or one of its derivatives (wm2, wmx, larswm,
ratpoison) as a minimal window manager for single-applications
environments. They should be pretty easy to lock down. Then of
course there's the old workhorse, twm.
I run larswm at ork and wmx at home. ratpoison is worth a look, just
to tie your brain in knots...
