          I don't know whether you have thought of using a Knoppix
CD in your situation. I think you said your CD drive is still OK.
Apparently Knoppix has improved hardware detection over standard
Debian and your hard drive won't be touched.
          They cost about $7 and are the ultimate rescue/repair disc. Many
people have had their wireless cards automatically detected. Also if
you like it there are ways of getting it on to a hard disk.
           Someone might be able to burn one at the next meeting.
