What about tape drives that hang off floppy controllers? I've got a
Colorado Jumbo 350 in my machine (recently acquired from a company
scrap-heap). tar and mt seem to work, and using tar -cvf /dev/ftape...
I'm able to back stuff up to tape, however, the problem lies when
getting the stuff back off the tape.

Is there any tool, GUI, ncurses, commandline or otherwise that I can use?

I've used taper in the past, and found that quite easy to drive, but I'm
curious as to what's out there and how it's done at commandline level.
