I had a stab at it, using an external Swann Netslider II modem we had
here.  It used a perl script that talked to the modem and executed
various AT commands to enable the speakerphone feature of the modem.
This is how Windows tools do it, so it can be done.

I started this, and I wouldn't mind actually doing something official
(e.g. start a SourceForge project or something) that does exactly this,
acts as a telephone. (perhaps answering machine later)  The main drive
for me is the fact that I really hate trying to type while juggling a
telephone handset which is attached to a phone on the opposite wall of
the room.  Headset phones are quite rare (well, I can't say I've looked
_really_ hard, just casual browsing here and there) around here, and I
don't feel like forking out heaps of cash when I can use a dialup modem
which has been made more-or-less redundant by our ADSL link.
