I have a debian (powerpc) box hooked up to optus cable.  During the initial
configuration I had a similar problem in that no matter what I did I
couldn't get a lease.  Comparing notes with someone else who had the same
setup working I discovered the only difference seemed to be that he was
using dhclient (the ISC one) while I was using pump.  I uninstalled pump and
isntalled dhclient and it all started working..... go figure.
