I do have a basis for such a request. The official Humbug web
page about the Humbug mailing lists says:

Before posting to the lists, make sure you've read AJ's
    Netiquette Guide <http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html>

And that guide says:

When you're replying to other people it's customary to
intersperse your response with their questions, both so you
can answer the actual question that was asked, and so
everyone else has some idea what you're talking about. It's
also customary to limit your quoting to the minimum possible
to get your point across. Don't quote the "Hi, lovely
weather we've been having" part of a post, unless you
specifically want to say "Yeah, it's due to the Libido
effect, I hear", so to speak. If your mail reader makes this
hard, get a new mail reader.

It would appear that my suggestion is fully in accord with
humbug policy.

[Topic change]

Some people have indicated that they felt I was being unfair
and/or arrogant in some of my comments in this thread. If I
have offended anybody at all, I apologise.

But I do suggest that readers of a list like this need to learn
not to take every little opinion that is expressed by somebody
as a personal slur -- they are just opinions and need to be seen
that way. In my case, they are opinions that have grown out of
several decades of experience as a programmer which gives them
some validity; but it doesn't mean that I think other people's
opinions or experiences have no value. I share my experience
because I think it might be helpful, but nobody has to take any
notice of me if they don't feel so inclined.

Rather than call me names if you don't like what I have to say,
it might be more useful to the community to simply share your
own experiences and let the readers draw their own conclusions.

Finally, the word "you" above does not refer to anybody in
particular -- it's a generic term meaning "not me".
