This is what the "force" (or is it ignore?) options are for.  I haven't used
RH for years so I can't recall the syntax but the man pages should tell you.
Look for stuff about ignoring dependencies.

I have changed my system's config now so that it uses spamc/spamd and exim
now runs stand alone.  I wasn't going to load test it however someone who
shall remain nameless decided it would be amusing to send me 500 emails and
someone else also thought it would be equally amusing to send me another 250
or so.  Anyway, the highest load average I saw was about 1.6 and memory
usage didn't go up at all, so all is good.
