Going from memory here, but is this the TDS protocol?  A few years back I
managed to get php talking to MS SQL 6.5 by grabbing the Sybase demo
software and compiling/linking the TDS stuff against the Sybase headers and
binaries.  It worked pretty well.  The other thing worth doing is to
investigate FreeTDS (http://www.freetds.org/).  At the time I was playing
with this stuff I couldn't get FreeTDS to work, but as I mentioned, that was
several years back.
