(I hope this is a good target audience for this question...)
I would like to be able to talk, with a linux box, to a sybase
database server that is running on an NT server (in an office LAN).
I have a username and password, and I can connect to the db server
using its own client software installed on other windows boxes. The
ODBC mechanisms are also working (eg, importing query results into
spreadsheats or whatever).
However, it would be oh so very useful if it was possible to access
the database directly from the linux box (for both queries and
updates) using perl scripts. If I could initially get a dump of its
databases and tables (and the data), that would be great. After
that, I need to be able to do queries and updates on a regular
basis.
I have all the perl DB and ODBC drivers installed, and I've written
perl interfaces to mysql before. There is a Sybase perl module but
I can't install it because it is looking for headers and development
libraries. (Do I really need the sybase driver libraries when the
more generic odbc drivers are available?)
Can anyone here point me in the right direction for how I can go
about getting this happening?
Thanks.
(Alterior motive... if I can eventually make the sybase server
functionally redundant by having it replaced with a mysql backend
on linux, then bye-bye nt box :-)
Cheers
Tony
