I'd say yes (about the 4MB/256MB free) since the machine will more than 
likely have a cache built up from everything it's done since boot. If 
you have enough ram and your system only uses a certain about of 
information, even with 100% cache hits, it'll still have ram free.

I'd say 4/256MB is normal :) One of the machines here at work has almost 
600MB free out of 1256MB ... but I suspect we don't make it work for 
it's money very hard.

As for IMAP clients, I got annoyed with Outlook Express because it would 
lag it's marking of messages read - if it happened to repoll for 
messages between writing it's cache and marking messages read, the 
messages all got marked unread again. (well, never got marked read in 
the first place).

I find Mozilla to be fairly tops for IMAP though. It seems intelligent 
enough to know what's happening most of the time.
