If you're going to bother with a /boot, put it at the beginning of the
disk. I wouldn't share a common /boot anyway as the distributions are
likely to smash all over each other when installing stuff there.
Also, if you want to try muliple Linuxen and vmware is out of the question
(or even if it isn't :) consider User Model Linux
(http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net and http://www.usermodelinux.org).
Very clean solution to running multiple Linuxen. Performance is always a
possible issue when talking about any machine abstraction like Vmware or
UML. Unless a user hits the box hard with games or compiles, etc they
aren't too likely to notice.
