Good afternoon all,
This is for the DNS gurus out there.
I'm in the process of setting up a DNS server for the sub-domain on the office
network using BIND 9.2.1 on RH7.3. I have got to the point where it will
resolve FQDNs quite happily. Problem is that I want it to be able to resolve
names of both the FQDN form and the hostname only form. ie: I want both the
following commands to return the same result.
dig hostname.long.sub.domain.name.com
dig hostname
Currently, the first one gets the correct result but the second only returns
with "connection timed out; no servers could be reached".
Unfortunately, I don't know how to configure BIND to do that and I haven't
been able to find anything in the doco about it. I'm pretty sure this is a
common requirement for internal DNS servers and therefore I'm pretty sure
there's a 'standard' way to do it. So, I'm now asking if anyone can tell me
if there is "a 'standard' way to do it"?
I've thought about creating a new zone that is a duplicate of the existing
zone with the domain name changed from "long.sub.domain.name.com." to "." but
I don't think that would have a chance of working - (root zone etc.).
Regards,
Ewan
